Taihu Tunnel, known as the longest under-lake passageway ever built in China, opened to traffic on December 30.
The 10.79-kilometer tunnel is a two-way, six-lane highway with a designed speed for motor vehicles of up to 100 km per hour.
It is considered the most critical node project of the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou South Expressway, the second expressway between Shanghai and Nanjing. The project was constructed by CCCC Third Harbor Engineering and China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group.
The Changzhou-Wuxi section of the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou South Expressway starts from the Qianhuang hub in the Wujin district of Changzhou, passes through Mashan in Wuxi to the southeast and the Meiliang Lake of Taihu Lake, and finally reaches the Nanquan hub to connect with the Around Taihu Expressway.
