New Year鈥檚 Day (Yuandan in Chinese), which is on January 1, marks the start of the year in the Gregorian calendar and it is a public holiday in China.
Yuandan appeared in the ancient times and meant 鈥渢he first day of a year鈥. The Chinese character 鈥淵uan鈥 means 鈥渁t the beginning鈥 and 鈥淒an鈥 means 鈥渄ay鈥. It was the first day of Chinese lunar year, while it was changed into the first day in Gregorian calendar since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949.
New Years Day for the year 2021 is observed on Friday, January 1st. It is a day off for the general population and schools.
