On June 19th, 2014, Changzhou’s proposal of establishing a friendship-city relationship with Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada is approved by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. Niagara Falls is going to become the 23rd international friendship city of Changzhou.
Niagara Falls is a Canadian city on the western bank of the Niagara River in the Golden Horseshoeregion of Southern Ontario. It is about 130 km by road from Ontario's capital of Toronto, which is located across Lake Ontario to the north. The area of the Niagara Region is approximately 1,800 km2. The city of Niagara Falls has a humid continental climate which is moderated to an extent in all seasons by proximity to water bodies.
The municipality of Niagara Falls was incorporated in 1903. With a plentiful and inexpensive source of hydroelectric power via the waterfalls, many electro-chemical and electro-metallurgical industries located there in the early to mid-20th century. Industry began moving out of the city in the 1970s and 80s because of economic recession and increasing global competition in the manufacturing sector. Tourism increasingly became the city's most important source of revenue. Both the American and Horseshoe falls can be best seen from the Canadian side of the river, so the city has one of the major tourist attractions of the world. The natural spectacle attracts millions of tourists yearly.
Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York are linked to major highways in Canada and the United States respectively. Amtrak has trains connecting it to Toronto and New York City. It is in a 1.5-hour drive from Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario and within a one-hour drive from Buffalo Niagara International Airport in Cheektowaga, New York.
