On December 14, CATL's Liyang plant in Changzhou achieved a significant milestone by being recognized as one of the 21 new members of the Global Lighthouse Network (GLN) by the World Economic Forum (WEF). This distinction marks a notable achievement for Changzhou, representing its first Lighthouse, and it is the third for CATL, following its Ningde and Yibin plants. Remarkably, within GLN's 153 manufacturing members, all three Lighthouse factories in the battery industry belong to CATL.
"The Global Lighthouse Network exemplifies the power of digital transformation,” said Kiva Allgood, Head of the World Economic Forum’s Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains. “Lighthouses are pioneering a path to unprecedented global impact, strategically weaving innovation throughout their expansive network – sculpting both a sustainable future and an era of transformative and lasting change."
Four lighthouses with outstanding environmental footprint reductions are gaining the additional designation of Sustainability Lighthouses. These global leaders are gaining momentum in achieving their sustainability pledges and greater operational competitiveness by realizing the potential of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies in operations.
The WEF highlighted CATL Liyang's pioneering initiatives in its announcement of the new Lighthouses, stating, "To address soaring demand and increasing labor costs, and to meet its carbon neutrality commitment, CATL Liyang applied big data to simulate quality testing, additive manufacturing to reduce changeover times, computer vision to achieve micron-level quality inspection, and deep learning to optimize process controls and energy management." These efforts resulted in a remarkable 320% increase in output, a 33% reduction in manufacturing costs, a 47.4% decrease in normalized emissions, and an impressive 99% reduction in quality defects. The defect measurement standard has been upgraded from “per million” to “per billion.”
Looking ahead, CATL plans to leverage the experience gained from its Lighthouse factory to implement innovative technologies across its global plants, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable development.
